Chenin Blanc is not the first grape people think of when they hear
the words "Napa Valley," but Ballentine Vineyards shows here that the
grape can adapt to a Californian lifestyle. The wine goes for maximum
freshness, and carefully applied aging in old oak adds roundness and a
smooth texture to the wine without sacrificing mouth-watering acidity.
In France, winemakers sometimes use a touch of sweetness to get the same
effect, but this wine is bone dry. The nose packs in mineral and citrus
aromas as well as notes of honey and pear, and the acidity helps prolong
these flavors on the finish. It's exciting to see an American winery
giving this classic winegrape the attention it deserves.
