The Larson Family Winery is one of a handful of family-owned wineries
remaining in Sonoma County. The winery itself has a long history;
located along Sonoma Creek, it was once the Embarcadero - the furthest
point upriver that steamboats could navigate, making it an important
spot for trade and development. In fact, the main office of the winery
was built by a steamboat captain. The Larson family bought the ranch in
1899, and for a long time it was the site of the Sonoma Rodeo. In 1977
Tom Larson and his father started planting winegrapes at the ranch.
Enthusiasm for the project led Tom to earn a degree in Fermentation
Science from UC Davis in 1984. Originally specializing in Chardonnay,
they eventually expanded to include several other varieties of wine,
both white and red.
The Larson Family Merlot 2002 is a soft, medium-bodied wine with
aromas of plum and sour cherry. Its fruity character and well-balanced
fruit and tannins make it easy to drink and comfortable with a variety
of foods; it stands up to beef, but won't overwhelm chicken or fish.
Vegetarian dishes based around portabello mushrooms will also benefit
from pairing with this Merlot.
