Beaujolais has a mixed reputation owing to the marketing behind
Beaujolais Nouveau, the light and innocuous wine which celebrates the
harvest on the third Thursday of each November. But "cru" Beaujolais,
which comes from one of ten specified villages in the region, is a
different animal, with the flavors, richness, and interest that the
Nouveau wines can only dream of. Julienas is one of those ten; named
after Julius Caesar, the village is said to be the first place where the
Gamay grape was ever planted in Beaujolais. The Maison Des Vignes
Julienas is aromatic, with notes of raspberry jam, spice, and brown
sugar (even though the wine is dry). It's round and smooth, with a
medium body and a well-balanced touch of acidity to keep it
food-friendly and refreshing.
