Tempranillo is the primary grape in Spain's most famous red wine,
Rioja, but is also used in several other parts of the country. Rene
Barbier's rendition comes from Penedès, the region around Barcelona,
which is an up-and-coming area for winemaking; the hills there
create cooling breezes that prevent the wines from becoming overripe
or too alcoholic.
In keeping with these virtues, Barbier's Tempranillo is relatively
light and smells of red fruits like cherries, cranberries, and
strawberries; on the palate there is also a note of spiciness. Because
of the wine's nimble character, Barbier decided not to age the wine in
oak, which would have overwhelmed these flavors. The result is a great
summer red instead of a powerhouse that would weigh you down in the heat
and humidity
