Malbec is, like Cabernet and Merlot, one the classic Bordeaux grapes,
but it almost became extinct in the 1900s when a louse called phylloxera
swept through Europe's vineyards like a plague. Fortunately Malbec had
already found a new home in Argentina, which embraced it as one of their
own and gave the orphaned grape a chance to show its greatness. The St.
Lucas is a textbook example: black cherry, plum, spice, and roast coffee
aromas, all wrapped up in a full-bodied wine with good acidity giving it
a clean finish.
